Over 250 market women have benefited from free healthcare provided by Darbem Hospital in Ashaiman on September 29, 2018 to mark world heart day. In an event held at the Ashaiman main market to mark the day, Doctors and Nurses from the hospital took the traders through health education, screening and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and other ailments. At the end of the day, the traders expressed their excitement and gratitude to the hospital for the kind gesture.
Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading killer, taking the lives of over 17.5million people every year (about 31% of all global deaths). Poor heart health has been linked to sedentary lifestyle, bad eating habits, smoking and alcohol consumption, etc. Hence the World Heart Day was instituted in the year 2000 to create awareness about the problem and to get every individual to make commitments towards the promotion of heart health. The day is marked around the world, including Ghana on the 29th of September every year with activities such as health walks, Blood Pressure screening, and presentations amongst others.
The theme for World Heart Day 2018 is “ promise for my heart, your heart, our hearts” hence as part of the hospital’s commitment to the welfare of its community members, a day-long free health care was organized for market women to mark the day.
