Some students of the University of Ghana have expressed their displeasure concerning a move by government to have students of tertiary institutions foot their own utility bills for accommodation facilities.
Adams Hussein, who is the J.C.R President of Jean Nelson Aka Hall, in a press briefing organized at commonwealth Hall, stated that such an action by government violates the national constitution itself and must be fought. He was addressing a press conference organized by student leaders of the University of Ghana. The S.R.C Vice President, Joshua Andrews Egyir as well J.C.R Presidents of various Halls of residence were among the student leaders present.
Adams stated that their stance is a non-negotiable one, “ it is solemly against these backdrops that we the students of University of Ghana want to register our non-negotiable stance against this deleterious policy”. The press briefing was attended by media houses across the country with about 150 students in attendance at the Commonwealth Hall Observatory.
He added that his outfit while awaiting a response from government will not hesitate to embark on a demonstration if the response is unfavorable.
Below are excerpts from the press statement;
“We are student leaders who believe in proactive leadership rather than being reactionary to issues. We will not wait till Government issues the planned directive before we act. We want to superintend substantively on our standpoint that we cannot pay! Therefore if Government, through any clandestine ways intends to implement the said policy, they should reconsider their decision because it will not see the light of day”.
“we want to place the clarion call on all parents, our brothers and sisters and all concerned stake holders to join in the struggle of making education accessible to all but not a reserve for the rich and elite in society”.
