President of University of Ghana’s Accra City Campus (ACC) SRC Delali Kporha has stated that students of the campus won’t vote in this years SRC elections.
This comes on the back of a communique issued by the Electoral Commission which indicated that students of the campus would for the first time be allowed to partake in main campus elections.
This follows a recent disagreement between the Main Campus SRC and the Leadership of the Accra City Campus and Distance students over the latter’s designation either as a JCR or an SRC.
The SRC President, Davis Ohene Fobi had in a letter reminded the City campus and Distance President that the University’s basic laws identified a single SRC. The Distance and City campus Presidents are on record to have expressed their displeasure over this development.
The SRC’s five year Strategic plan re-echoes the position of the institution’s laws; page 10, item 5 of the plan reads;
“University of Ghana has one Students’ Representative Council (SRC).” Distance and City campus students were not recognized as eligible voters in the past.
Prior to this, article 29 (8)(12) had barred distance and students of the satellite campus from voting and contesting the elections as well. The said provision reads
“Any student pursuing in whole, a programme at any campus of this university where a students’ Representative Council is elected under any other Constitution shall not be eligible to contest as an Executive Officer under this constitution.”
Speaking on Radio Univers’ midday news on Wednesday April 6, the leader of the satellite campus said any attempt to have students of his campus vote in the election contravenes the SRC constitution.
” We are governed by a constitution, this constitution prevents our students from voting in that election, ACC Students do not recognize Fobi as the SRC President” , he stated.
kporha further added that his office had received information that a student of the campus was contesting in this year’s SRC election.
“I have received that information at my desk and will look into that and advise him appropriately”
