The 8th edition of the annual Sprite Ball Competition took place over the weekend from the 9th -10th of January 2015 at the El WAK stadium. This event which seeks to bring all Senior High Schools across the country to compete in a basketball competition, saw schools like Mfantsipim, Ketasco, Presec, Aggrey Memorial, T.I Ahmadiyya, Opoku Ware, Pope John’s, Sogakope Senior High, Mfantsiman Girls all competing for the product and cash prizes.
This year’s event was sponsored by Rite Multimedia who have for some years now been the sole sponsors of most basketball competitions in the country.
After the two day event which was patronized by Professor Azumah Nelson (WBC Super Featherweight champion), Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu (Director of Sports, University of Ghana) and Mr. Yaw Sakyi, (CEO, RITE Multimedia), T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High and Mfantsipim School emerged victorious after beating Aggrey Memorial Senior High and Keta Senior High in the female and male divisions respectively.
Addressing the dignitaries, contingents and spectators, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu (Director of Sports, University of Ghana) who was accompanied by some members of the UG Sports Directorate introduced and elaborated on the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS).
He reiterated that being the first of its kind in Ghana, “The University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) seeks to offer talented athletes admission on concessionary bases. It is the first of its kind and we are ready to assist any student who wants to join the University through this policy” he concluded.
After talking to the athletes, fliers which had brief information about the policy were distributed to all present and were encouraged to contact the University of Ghana Sports Directorate for further information.
At the end of the program, the University of Ghana Sports Directorate Technical Team identified some talented basketball players who have been short listed for the UG-PAAS for the 2015/2016 academic year.
