University of Ghana authorities have closed down the staff canteen popularly known as bushke again after several months of closure for renovation.
According to the Director of Public Affairs of the University of Ghana, Madam Stella Amoah, the Bush Canteen has been closed to make way for the reconstruction of drainage and re-wiring of the place to check fire outbreak. But the traders disagree saying it is a deliberate attempt to give the stores and sheds to people with influence.
According to the women, the exercise should have been communicated to them early as they are going to run into debts for restocking. They are also saying that even after the market has been reopen it will take time for students and staff to start patronizing a situation they say would adversely affect their trade.
Meanwhile some patrons of the canteen in an interview with univers news says the timing for the closure of the market is not appropriate regardless of the reason saying it should come during recess. This they attribute to long queues in the “night market” another common canteen in the university which could serve as an alternative for the staff canteen.
