The second female President of University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council(SRC), Ms Esinam Afi Seade has encouraged females to ‘shine’ and not “feel intimidated about what people will say.”

In a Facebook post, the miss ECOWAS 2013 winner and Marketing Consultant urged females not to allow their brilliance to keep them stuck and ignorant. “WE HAVE MAGNIFICENT BRAINS,But we use a great deal of our brilliance to keep ourselves STUCK and IGNORANT…keeping ourselves from shining..WE ARE SO AFRAID OF OUR BEAUTY, RADIANCE and brilliance because we fear some people out there will talk…IT IS NOT A CRIME TO REMAIN STUNNING YET INTELLIGENT..,” she asserted.

A few months again, she made headlines by fending off stiff competition from a record number of candidates to emerge as the University’s second female SRC President.

Her comments seem to resonate well with gender activists who have consistently bemoaned the low participation of women in public life, due to societal constraints and expectations. Intense criticism of females in the limelight is one of the factors that discourages others from pursuing certain career paths.
