The New Patriotic Party’s campaign is receiving an unexpected but very convenient boost from an unusual source – Kalyppo, a popular fruit drink in Ghana.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is one of two major contending parties in Ghana’s politics – the other being the ruling party, NDC (National Democratic Congress). As both parties intensify their campaigns towards the 2016 general elections months away, the NPP is receiving extra attention on social media from a #KalyppoChallenge craze that started when the party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akuffo Addo, was caught sipping a Kalyppo in his car.
Kalyppo is a drink that is more popular among kids than adults. It is more identifiable as a kids-lunchbox item than an adult’s on-the-go snack. Therefore when a picture of the NPP presidential candidate casually sipping on his Kalyppo surfaced online, the picture immediately went viral and Ghanaians wasted no time in joining him by sharing funny pictures of themselves sipping kalyppo. while some sought to mock him, most praised the presidential candidate for patronizing and promoting the Ghanaian-made brand.
The #KalyppoChallenge is undoubtedly making the NPP more popular online and offering producers of the drink free promotion. Sales of Kalyppo are hinted to have increased significantly since the craze started.
