Nominations for various JCR executive offices closed at midnight of November 3, 2015 after it was opened to aspirants on 26th October 2015. The electoral commission for the 2015/2016 academic year advertised the following positions;
- Vice President
- General secretary
- Organizing secretary
- Sports secretary
It is however, worrying that only eight (8) JCR members are aspiring for the various offices. I recall that last year’s election was quite competitive except for the Presidential portfolio, which had only one aspirant. This was evident during the face-to-face debate at Radio Universe prior to the Election Day.
If out of six offices, only eight JCR members are interested, then the decline in students’ interest in JCR elections is a cause for worry. There has been numerous messages circulating on WhatsApp expressing dissatisfaction in the current Afful-led administration and one would have thought that competent students would rise up to save the situation but it is rather the opposite where students prefer to sit on the fence and watch a few others comfortably share the portfolios among themselves.
Below are the aspirants for the various offices;
- Samuel Osei Sarkodie
- Manford Percy
- Ameyi Justice
- Emmanuel Adedayoo
Vice president (unopposed)
- Amoo Ivy Benedicta Ofeibea
General Secretary (unopposed)
- Kingful Kesia Sakyiwa
Organizing secretary (unopposed)
- Asanima Adams Asabire
Sports secretary (unopposed)
- Yeboah Emmanuel
It is worth noting that this list is pending academic clearance from the Dean of Students before the aspirants can be accepted as legitimately nominated.
Speaking on the decline of students’ interest in JCR governance, the Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Bingle Musah Abdul-Mumin was optimistic of a high voter turnout due to a merger of the general JCR election with Floor Representative elections. He explained that the floor representative election has been added to the general election to enhance its credibility and encourage more members to patronize the general election. He was however, worried that the Election Day, scheduled for 17th November, falls in the revision week and that might affect the voter turnout
