On Friday, 27th March 2015, Afua Asieduwaa Akrofi of Evandy (UN Hall, Legon) was crowned the first ever Miss Elite Legon beauty queen at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
Miss Elite Legon was organised by ML Events Ghana in collaboration with the University of Ghana SRC Women’s Commission. This beauty pageant was focused, not only on beauty, but the use of beauty and intelligence to positively impact lives in society. Another way this beauty pageant was unique is that it was done by hall basis. That is, each contestant represented her hall, thereby making it an inter-hall competition.
The Adae Kesie hall of the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, where the event was held, was filled to capacity with family, friends and loved ones of the various contestants there to cheer them on to victory.
It was a fun packed night starting with an introductory catwalk and choreography by all 14 contestants. They also showcased their talents in rap, singing, dancing, acting, drawing and poetry. There were musical performances by artistes like K-Gee of TV3 Mentor fame and Luther. The girls who made it to the top 5 delivered speeches on gender equality and women empowerment, answered questions from the judges to test their intelligence, after which the 3 winners were selected and crowned.
Naa Ashorkor (Starr fm presenter), Naa Oyoe Quartey (Miss Malaika 2013), Lina Badu (model), Mora Nana Esi Anakwa and Miss Debora Abormagah were the judges for the night.
5 of the 14 contestants were awarded for their performances on the night; including Miss Discipline (Violet), Miss Catwalk (Josephine), Miss Talent (Loretta), Miss Eloquent (Olivia) and Miss Congeniality. For Miss Congeniality, the girls were made to vote for anyone they felt deserved it but themselves, and 10 of them voted for Juliet.
After the best 5 performances were announced, the top five contestants of the competition (independent of the best 5 performances) were selected, bringing the journey to an end for the remaining 9 ladies. The top 5; Sandra, Emma, Juliet, Bianca and Afua each delivered a speech on gender equality and women empowerment, and answered one question each from the judges.
Then it was goodbye for Bianca and Juliet as the judges selected Sandra, Emma and Afua as the top three. In the final moments of truth, Emma was crowned the second runner up, and Sandra the 1st runner up, leaving Afua as the winner of the maiden edition of Miss Elite Legon. The room was instantly thrown into a frenzy as supporters of Afua celebrated her win.
Emma takes away a tablet, six months Pulse fitness, souvenirs from sponsors and a one year scholarship as the second runner up. Sandra takes away a laptop, six months Pulse fitness, souvenirs from sponsors and a one year scholarship as the first runner up. Finally, Afua takes away an iPhone 6, one year scholarship, an all expenses paid trip to South Africa for the summer holidays, a one year Pulse fitness, cash and souvenirs from sponsors as the winner of Miss Elite Legon 2015.
